The term “Fischerkie(t)z” means fishermen’s settlement. The first of these Slavonic settlements on an island in the River Spree dates back to the eleventh century and has given the town its name. |

‘Bezkow’ or ‘Besecow’ means ‘place on sand’. The “Fischerkie(t)z” still retains a lot of its old-world charm. |
